Crowd-Pleasing Super Bowl Snacks You Won’t Believe Are Vegan

Want to hear a funny story? Our Referee Manager, Jen Z., is always doing super creative things with her healthy diet. She ‘s been a vegan for a lot of her adult life, and has experimented with a raw diet—but that doesn’t mean she deprives herself. In fact, it’s led her to find (and invent!) a ton of to-die-for recipes that you’d never know are vegan or raw.

Case in point: last year, Jen invited a big a crew of friends over to her place for the Super Bowl, and made a ton of food to satisfy her guests’ snack cravings. Everyone scarfed down the chili cheese fries, pigs in a blanket, tacos, and more, and, without exception, loved every bite.

It wasn’t until the last delicious bite was polished off that Jen told everyone her little secret: everything they’d eaten was vegan. VEGAN.  They couldn’t believe it.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan, looking for delicious ways to cut down on your meat consumption, or simply want some healthy alternatives to traditional meat-laden party snacks (or if you just want to see the looks on your guests' faces when you do your own “big reveal”), Jen’s recipes can’t be beat. And lucky for us, she’s shared all her secrets! Happy cooking!

Cook-Free Snacks

Jen kicked things off (football pun!) with some super easy healthy snacks. Her go-to's are:

  • Tapenade with multigrain crackers or bread

  • Chips

  • Fresh fruit

  • Veggie plate

Vegan Chili Cheese Fries

Ingredients

  • Frozen Fries (Jen prefers sweet potato)

  • Olive Oil, for sautéing

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • ¼ onion, diced

  • 1 bag vegan meat crumbles (Jen’s favorite is Beyond Meat)

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon oregano

  • Sea salt, to taste

  • 1 cup diced tomatoes (fresh or canned)

  • 1 bag vegan cheese shreds (Jen recommends Follow Your Heart)

  • Vegan sour cream (Follow Your Heart)

  • Green onions, thinly sliced

  • Optional toppings: sliced jalapeños, beans, salsa

Instructions

  1. Bake fries per instructions on the bag.
  2. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet over medium-low heat, warm the olive oil. Add the garlic and onion and sauté, stirring frequently, until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add meat crumbles and a tiny big of water to the skillet and stir until warmed through.
  4. Add chili powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, oregano, sea salt, and diced tomatoes, raise heat to medium, and simmer until it has reached a somewhat regular consistency.
  5. Plate the baked French fries and ladle the chili over them. Top with cheese (microwave for a few seconds if you'd like the cheese to be melted), then add sour cream, green onions, and whatever other toppings you desire.

Note: You can easily convert this dish into nachos by using chips instead of fries.

Quick & Easy Vegan Pigs in a Blanket

Ingredients

  • 1 can Pillsbury crescent rolls

  • 1 cup vegan cheese shreds (or slices, if you prefer)

  • 2 packs of vegan hot dogs, cut in halves

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F.

  2. Separate the crescent rolls into triangles and arrange on a foil-lined baking sheet. Top each with cheese.

  3. Place one hot dog half on each triangle, and wrap the dough around it.

  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden.

 

Veggie Tacos with Guacamole

Ingredients

  • Olive oil, for sautéing

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • ¼ onion, diced

  • 1 bag vegan meat crumbles

  • Taco seasoning (Jen likes Old El Paso)

  • Corn tortillas

  • Taco fixings: vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion

  • Guacamole

  • 2 ripe avocados

  • 2 tomatoes, chopped

  • Juice from 1-2 limes (Jen likes her guacamole super tangy, so she uses 2)

  • Fresh cilantro, chopped

  • 1 jalapeño, chopped (remove seeds if you want it less spicy)

Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet over medium-low heat, warm the olive oil. Add the garlic and onion and sauté, stirring frequently, until softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. Add meat crumbles and a tiny bit of water to the skillet and stir until warmed through.

  3. Stir in the taco seasoning and cook for a few additional minutes, until combined.

  4. In another hot pan, heat the tortillas, flipping to warm both sides.

  5. Meanwhile, make the guacamole: In a bowl, mash the avocados with a fork. Add the tomatoes, lime juice, cilantro, and jalapeño, and mix until well-combined.

  6. Plate the warm tortillas, and fill with the meat and whatever other taco fixings you want. Top with guacamole.

 

Vegan Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • Olive oil, for sautéing

  • 1 bag vegan meat crumbles

  • Organic tomato paste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • Vegan hamburger buns (Jen likes Arnold brand)

  • Vegan margarine

  • Optional toppings: onion, dairy-free cheese, tomatoes

Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the veggie meat and stir until heated throughout.

  2. Add the tomato paste and spices and stir until well-combined.

  3. Meanwhile, spread buns with a thin layer of vegan margarine and lightly toast.

  4. Scoop meat onto toasted buns, add any toppings you like, and serve!

 

Dessert

Jen doesn't have a formal dessert recipe, but she recommends going out and buying a big package of vegan cookies and a container of vegan ice cream (in your flavors of choice), plus some vegan chocolate chips and shredded coconut. When someone's sweet tooth starts clamoring, make vegan ice cream sandwiches with the cookies and ice cream, then roll the ice cream sides in the chocolate chips and coconut.
